CT City Ballet, Philharmonic Orchestra return to the Artscape stage

They will only be performing three shows.

In collaboration with the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra (CPO), the Cape Town City Ballet (CTCB) is set to return to the Artscape stage for three shows only from 10 to 12 December 2020. Cape Town City Ballet – Back On Stage features a programme of two works – George Balanchine’s Serenade and Moon Behind The Clouds, a suite of works made during the time of Covid-19, by South African choreographers Veronica Paeper, Celeste Botha, Kirsten Isenberg, Yaseen Manuel, Lindy Raizenberg, Louisa Talbot and Marlin Zoutman.  It’s the first time since the lockdown that these companies will be on stage again.


New HBO Show “The Undoing” hits Showmax

It features Nicole Kidman and Hugh Grant in the lead roles.

The highly anticipated new HBO series, The Undoing, is finally available on Showmax. Viewers can stream the show on the platform since yesterday, 30 November. The story follows the life of Grace and her Husband. Their lives begin to unravel after a gruesome murder on a new parent at their child’s school. Many have hailed this series as one of the best shows of the year, however, some have also come out and said they hate it. Whatever the case might be, it is safe to say the show is well worth the watch. New episodes will be released every Monday on Showmax.


Clover rolls out new polony flavoured cheese

It is meant to replace the traditional polony-and-cheese combination in kotas and fat cakes.

Clover has recently rolled out a new product – polony flavoured cheese slices. It is marketed as an economical replacement for the traditional polony-and-cheese combination in kotas and fat cakes. Clover seems to aim this product at vetkoek and kota lovers, which is popular in townships and usually stuffed with polony and cheese as the standard ingredients. The company has said this new item 


Qantas quits South African route

They will only reinstate it in October 2021.

The Australian airline, Qantas, has suspended flights to and from South Africa. They have also cancelled routes to the USA and UK. Qantas will only reinstate these routes by October 2021. This is likely due to Coronavirus concerns and to protect Australia’s fight against the virus.


Siya Kolisi named African Trailblazer of the Year

He received this accolade that the 2020 E! People’s Choice Awards.

At this year’s E! People’s Choice Awards, the Springbok captain, Siya Kolisi was named African Trailblazer of the year! This category is the first of its kind at this awards ceremony and recognises extraordinary charitable work done in Africa. Kolisi is being recognised for his extraordinary work off the sporting field with the launch of Kolisi Foundation, earlier this year.


Toorbos film selected as South Africa’s 2021 Oscar entry

It’s based on the book by Dalene Matthee

Toorbos is a new, local film based on the book with the same title by acclaimed author, Dalene Matthee. Now, this film has been selected as South Africa’s entry for the best Foreign Language film at the 2021 Oscar awards. The competition was tough and the South African Academy Awards selection committee, composed of professionals from various fields of the filmmaking value chain evaluated several diverse, rich, and unique submissions from the 2–5 November 2020 at Nu Metro cinemas across the country. The film has also been selected or the Torino Film Festival in Italy, November 2020


New 95% effective COVID-19 vaccine announced

It will be manufactured by Moderna Inc.

Moderna Inc. said its Covid-19 vaccine was 94.5% effective in a series of a large late-stage clinical trials, another sign that a fast-paced hunt by scientists and pharmaceutical companies is paying off with potent new tools that could help control a worsening pandemic. This announcement comes mere days after Pfizer claims to have a vaccine that is 90% effective against Coronavirus. Soon, these vaccines will be manufactured at large-scale and distributed to millions globally.


New Showmax original to hit screens in February 2021

The show will be called “Dam”

Showmax is set to release a new psychological thriller in February 2021. “Dam” has just wrapped shooting and tells the story of a family – and a town – with dark secrets, and about how what you push down will eventually rise up. Neil Sandilands returned from Hollywood for the series. This will be his first South African role since 2013. The show is set to create a new standard for local shows.

“It’s safe to say you’ve never seen anything like Dam on South African TV,” says Candice Fanguiero, Showmax’s head of content.


World Travel Awards announced 2020 Africa winners

Cape Town was named Africa’s Africa’s Leading Festival & Event Destination.

The World Travel Awards has revealed the winners of its first Africa travel awards categories. Cape Town was included among the winners as the Leading Festival & Event Destination in Africa. Table Mountain was also crowned as Africa’s Leading Tourist Attraction. Durban was voted Africa’s Leading City Destination.


Kenyan comedian named African Social Star of 2020

Elsa Majimbo won this award at this year’s E! People’s Choice Award.

At this year’s E! People’s Choice Award, Kenyan comedian, Elsa Majimbo won the award for African Social Star of 2020. Between 1 October and 23 October, E! engaged fans worldwide to vote in over 40 categories across TV, music, movies and pop culture. For the second time in the history of the ceremony, the E! People’s Choice Awards opened a category dedicated to Africa. The 19-year-old Majimbo, born and raised in Kenya, rose to fame this year when her satirical videos began to go viral on the internet.
