There have been surges in Gauteng and the Western Cape.

Over the past 24 hours, a record-breaking 26,485 new Coronavirus cases have been reported in the country. There are heavy surges in infections in both the Western Cape and Gauteng. In Gauteng alone, 16,091 new cases were reported and the Western Cape saw an increase of almost 3,000 new infections. The acting Minister of Health has said that most provinces in the country are almost on “red alert”, indicating that infections are rising proportionately throughout the country as the third wave makes its way through South Africa. The current level 4 lockdown is set to be reviewed by this coming weekend, whereafter it can be relaxed, extended or even be made more strict.
